How to Start Potty Training a Puppy

You come home from work after a long day, kick off your shoes and then you see it. Your puppy has done his business on your new rug… again! You decide right then and there that you are going to take control of your puppy by potty training him. If only you knew the right way to go about it. The good news is that potty training a puppy is not as hard as you might think, and it is something that you can do very easily in your home. The first thing you should figure out is how you want to potty train your little pup. There are many methods that work well so you will need to choose which one you want to use. Most people find that crate training works really well for them while others swear by paper training. It all comes down to what works for you.

Paper training your puppy is a popular choice because you don’t have to buy a bulky crate as you would if you were crate training.

Instead you use either newspapers or puppy pads which admit an odor that attracts your puppy to go potty on them. This is a good way to start because you can watch your puppy and when he starts sniffing the floor, indicating he is searching for a place to go to the bathroom, you can pick him up and put him on his papers. Remember to praise him when you see him go on the papers.

Crate training your puppy requires you to buy a crate. Whats good about this method is you can put your puppy in his crate to keep him out of trouble when you can’t watch him. Crate training will also help your puppy learn to control his urge to go to the bathroom and if done right, can save you some money and aggravation because your puppy will have less of a tendency to go on your carpet.

Regardless of how careful you are with you puppy, he will have an accident on your floor.

This is part of raising a puppy and you should expect this to happen every now and then during the beginning. The most important thing to remember is that if you don’t catch your puppy doing his business on your floor, you should not scold him. The reason for this is because he won’t know why you are scolding him unless he is in the middle of doing the deed. If you do catch him in action, just a firm “no” is all that is needed and move him on to his papers or outside if possible. Remember to keep a close eye on him and soon your puppy will be potty trained and you wont have to worry about any surprises when you come home from work.

Puppy Crate Training Helps Your Puppy

Puppy crate training is a great way to train your puppy. It is an essential ingredient of the house training process. If you leave this element out of the process, you will be missing something that can make the life of your puppy and your family so much easier.

Remember that your puppy is like a newborn baby and he needs the comfort that comes from knowing that you are not far from him. A good rule of thumb is to keep the crate in the same room that you are in. Keeping the crate close will allow your puppy to see that you are not far away and will alleviate seperation anxiety.

Puppy crate training is also a good practice because you will be creating a place that your puppy will learn to call its own. The crate can be used for going to dog shows, doctors appointments and the like. It can also be used as a kind of puppy car seat. This is great for when you take those short trips to the supermarket with your dog.

Keep in mind that when choosing a crate, you want to pick a crate that is not heavy and that is big enough for your puppy.

If you know the size of your puppy, you can use those measurements to buy one that is just right for it. Do not choose one that is too big as this may give the puppy the idea that one side of it can be used to go puppy poddy.

While puppy crate training is not easy, remember that with the proper training this challenge can be easily overcome. It can be done easily if you have the right training!

The Truth About Dogs and Human Society Numbers

Salem, OR, (PRWEB) November 2, 2007

Melisa Bethel today launched a new blog on dog training techniques. During the last 3 years the increase in dogs entering Human Society’s has increased by 7%. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that these dogs are untrained and now unwanted.

With over 4 million K-9′s entering these Society’s each year there are few of them placed in new homes while the others are destroyed. Human Shelter will spend over 1 billion dollars each year to destroy unwanted animals. What can we do to help these numbers?

First, spay and neuter all of are dogs. Over a time of six years one female dog and her offspring can possibly produce over 67,000 dogs.

Next, let us train these animals, so we can enjoy their companionship for the duration of their lives. There are a number of class’s a person can take and also books to educate one on the proper ways of training. Education is the key to training a dog.

How about the purchase of a puppy? While there are lots of breeders who advertise in the local paper, should we buy from these breeders? The Human Society says, “NO.” They say that purchasing a puppy from a breeder is only encouraging them to breed again. Also, that some breeders are not involved with proper veterinarian procedures and often breed one animal a very high number of times thus endangering the animals life.
